photography

When I was active in Technique, i took lots of photos. Some of them i really liked, and most of them weren't so spectacular. Oh well.

35mm

I took many more black and white photos in 35mm than I did color, although it seems that color weighs in more heavily in this gallery. C'est la vie.

Medium Format

It seems like a snobby thing to say, but after shooting medium format for a while, you hardly ever imagine going back to 35mm. There seems to be so much more character in 120 film than in those little cartridges. For a while, i refused to go back, but only because i could take terrible photos with my holga, and those seemed good enough. thank god the negatives were so large.

Large Format

God help you if you ever decide to shoot large format. There is always that fear that you accidentally overexposed an entire sheet of film or possibly loaded it incorrectly. With 120, you can almost write off the price of the film, but a 4x5 sheet of film feels as decadent as a morel, but not nearly as edible. In any case, the only real inspiration i had in large format was richard avedon, whose portraits are not only gorgeous but revealing.

Technique owned a single view camera, a Calumet monorail with a dinged up Symar lens. I was lucky enough to get plenty of quality time with it. The result, as you can see, is a single photo. Most of the other photos i took were polaroids that i haven't gotten around to scanning.
